One course or lesson that changed how I work

Sometimes, a single course or lesson can redefine not just how we work, but how we think about work itself. For me, that pivotal moment came during an advanced editing course I took online. While I had years of hands-on experience, this course reframed my approach by emphasizing strategic thinking over transactional execution.

The key lesson that transformed my workflow was the importance of thinking like both an editor and a reader simultaneously. Instead of focusing solely on grammar, structure or style, I learned to anticipate how a piece would be received, interpreted and engaged with by its audience. This shifted my mindset from purely correcting content to enhancing its clarity, impact and purpose.

Another transformative aspect was mastering workflow systems and productivity frameworks. I realised that editing is not just about skill but also about efficiency and process. Learning to segment projects, track revisions methodically and prioritise feedback improved both the quality of my work and the consistency of my output.

The course also reinforced the value of continuous learning and reflection. Each assignment and peer review offered fresh perspectives, reminding me that there is always room to refine technique, expand understanding and stay curious.

Since taking this course, I approach every project with a more holistic mindset, balancing precision, audience engagement and creative insight. It didn’t just teach me tools—it reshaped my philosophy of work. I became more intentional, proactive and confident in guiding authors, clients and colleagues toward their goals.

Ultimately, this single lesson reinforced a principle I now carry into every project: that the right mindset, combined with skill and structure, can elevate work from competent to exceptional.
