What a fiction editor actually does (and doesn’t do)

Fiction editing is a nuanced and collaborative process, often misunderstood by writers. While it involves refining a manuscript, a fiction editor’s role extends far beyond correcting grammar and spelling. Equally important is understanding what editing is not, to set realistic expectations for authors.

1. What a fiction editor does
A fiction editor helps strengthen story elements such as plot, pacing, character development, dialogue and narrative consistency. They provide feedback on structure, suggest ways to clarify or enhance scenes, and ensure the story flows logically. Depending on the project, they may perform developmental edits, line edits, or copyedits, each with a specific focus. For instance, developmental edits look at big-picture issues like plot holes or character arcs, while line edits refine sentence-level clarity and style.

2. Preserving the author’s voice
A key responsibility of a fiction editor is to respect the author’s voice. Suggestions are made to enhance readability or storytelling impact without rewriting the work in the editor’s own style. The goal is to elevate the manuscript while keeping the author’s unique style and intent intact.

3. What a fiction editor doesn’t do
Editors do not create the story for the author. They don’t invent characters, rewrite scenes or impose personal stylistic preferences. They avoid turning the manuscript into their own version of ‘perfect’ fiction; doing so would compromise the author’s voice and creative vision.

4. Collaboration and communication
Fiction editing is a partnership. Editors provide guidance, alternatives and constructive feedback, but the author makes the final decisions. Open communication ensures that edits support the story’s goals without overstepping creative boundaries.

A fiction editor’s job is to clarify, refine and strengthen a manuscript, all while preserving the author’s voice and intent. By understanding what an editor does—and doesn’t do—authors can approach the process with realistic expectations, ensuring a productive and respectful collaboration.
